About Me

Who I Am

Hi, I’m Jamie. Who I am is ever changing, however, there are some things that I have been consistently for more than twenty years. I’m a mother, a single mother, for over thirty years. Having my first child at the age of 19 was hard, and I made it harder with poor life choices. I am a recovering addict, clean & sober for more than 20 years. My three youngest children have never seen me use and I am extremely grateful for that.

Finding My Way Outdoors

In 2021 I found out some fellow recovering addict women went backpacking a lot. This is something I had always considered intriguing, but I didn’t know anyone who did it or where to get started until then. My first time with a pack on my back, getting to our campsite and setting up gave me a sense of pride and accomplishment that I had never felt in my life.

Why the Pacific Crest Trail?

I hate to say it, but I am a product of the “Wild Effect”. This was my first introduction to the PCT, but since then I have listened to so many other audiobook experiences about all the US long trails. No matter what story I have listened to, I always finish the book certain that the PCT is the one I should start on.

Full Stride at 50

About 3 ½ years ago I began the deepest dive I’ve ever done to figure out who I am. Through my intense therapy and self-exploration, I discovered things about myself and reasons for some of my choices over my lifetime. Throughout these last few years, the idea of entering my 50th decade became more of how I wanted to claim who I am deep inside, rather than the idea that I was “too old” to do the things I desire to do. It is never too late to follow your heart’s desire and that is how I want to live.

What Is Earthen Odyssey?

I came up with Earthen Odyssey because of my desire to explore the earth. I want to journey the globe hiking, camping, and climbing and this seemed like a fitting combination of words to name my website. After my PCT hike is over, I hope to continue with my site so that I can share my adventures as I have them.

Come Along for the Journey

Come along with me as I prepare for my first journey. Watch me as I dig deep into gear research and choose the gear that I believe will serve me the best throughout my hike. Read my blog and watch my YouTube channel before I leave and once I’m on the trail.

Then continue to come along with me on my journey when I return home and acclimate to life again because rumor has it, the adjustment is hard when coming off a thru-hike.
